- Khoza instead announced an initiative between the league and MultiChoice to assist players plan for their lives after football
The much anticipated press conference held by the Premier Soccer League at its Parktown offices was something of an anti-climax.
Hosted by league chairman Irvin Khoza, the televised event was expected to provide the football fraternity with answers on pressing legal matters. These included the Kaizer Chiefs Covid-19 saga as well as a conclusion to the National First Division debacle involving Royal AM, Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City.
Instead, as reported by Soccer Laduma, it was to announce the launch of the Player Transition Programme in partnership with MultiChoice. This initiative is intended to help players transition from the final part of their playing career into life after the game.
Addressing the elephant in the room, News24 quoted Khoza as saying:
"Yes, it took too long because of the complexity of the matter," Khoza told reporters on Wednesday during a press conference. The PSL fixtures affect a lot of people and a lot of stakeholders. The PSL is a members organisation with their rules, and the spirit is that the teams must play.
"We need to make sure we accommodate the members and not just deal with the rules punitive. The manual dictates that the football department is the one that deals with the fixtures. We met for the first time on 3 December as executives after we received the letter from Kaizer Chiefs about their Covid-19 outbreak.
Khoza concluded that this and Royal AM-Sekhukhune United matter were being settled procedurally.
