"I remember when Atsu went to trials at Porto and succeeded, they were to pay him 800 Euros a month. I was there when Christian sent me through Western Union and I received 800 Euros," he said.

Yartey was pleased because he thought Atsu had sent him the money to use, but that turned out to not be the case.

"But [Atsu] called followed and he said the 800 Euros that he sent will be this equivalent in cedis and he was sending money to give it to the church."

The church was located few metres from Cheetah FC, the club Atsu was playing for in Ghana. He continued sending money to the church for three months.
