Football has gone through a series of revolutions, and despite the nationality switch rule having existed since the 20 century, the rule during that time allowed players to represent different countries at the senior level at different tournaments, only if, the player had citizenship.

But as time went on, the need to protect countries from losing their best talent necessitated FIFA, the world soccer governing body, notably in 2004, to rethink the eligibility rules by requiring that a player must demonstrate a ‘clear connection’ to any country they wish to represent.

The new law also allows a player to represent one country at the youth level, and another at the senior level, as long as the necessary ‘connection’ can be established. Nonetheless, Ghana over the years has been at both ends; losing out on great talent, and gaining others.

Sports Brief looks at Ghanaian-born players who are yet to decide on their international future.

Angsar Knauff [Winger / Wing-back]

The 21-year-old is still unsettled about which nation to pledge his international future. He is a German football player of Ghanaian descent who currently plays for German giants club Borussia Dortmund. He's currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, helping them to the Europa League final for the first time in 41 years.

He is a German youth international having earned caps at under-19, under-20, and under-21 level.

Knuaff plays as a left winger and is also capable of playing in defence as a right wing-back. On 25 November 2020, he signed his first professional contract agreeing to a three-year deal. Knauff made his professional debut a month later, coming on as a substitute in the 83rd minute for Thorgan Hazard in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League match against Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Born to a Ghanaian father and German mother in Göttingen, Knauff is eligible to represent either nation at senior level, and the issue has become prominent over the past months following his fine form in Bundesliga 1 this season.

Kelvin Yeboah [Striker]

Kelvin Yeboah is striker who plays for Genoa in the Italian Serie A.

The 22-year-old was born in Accra but grew up in England before moving to Italy. He played in the West Ham academy before joining Italian Serie C side Gozzano academy.

Yeboah is eligible to represent both countries at the international level though he is yet to be capped.

However, he rejected a call-up into the Ghana senior team ahead of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa. He later honoured the Italian Under-21 call-up and made his debut with the Italian youth team as a substitute in the qualifying match won 3–0 against Luxembourg.

Jeremie Frimpong [Lateral defender/right wing-back]

The Amsterdam-born has refused to rule out playing for either of Ghana, England of the Netherlands in the future.

His family moved to England when he was seven years old. As such, Jeremie Frimpong is still unsettled on which nation to pledge his international future.

However, Frimpong has represented the Netherlands at under-19 and under-20 youth international levels.

Frimpong joined Manchester City at the age of nine and progressed through the club's youth ranks. He later signed a four-year deal with Celtic in September 2019.

Myron Boadu [Striker]

Budding Dutch-Ghanaian star Myron Boadu is in a dilemma over choosing between Ghana and Netherlands with regards to where to pledge his international allegiance.

Born in Amsterdam to Ghanaian parents, the AS Monaco forward started playing for SC Buitenveldert, before joining the AZ academy in 2013.

Born in Amsterdam, Boadu is of Ghanaian descent. Boadu made his debut for the Netherlands national team in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match against Estonia, scoring the fifth and final goal in a 5–0 victory.

He also became the first player born in the 21st century to feature and score for the Netherlands national team.

That is the only appearance he has made for the Oranje.
