FootballLegendary Forward Asamoah Gyan Gives Honest Response To Calls For His Inclusion In Ghana's World Cup Team
- Since Ghana made a return to the FIFA World Cup, there have been several calls for Asamoah Gyan to be included in the Black Stars squad due to his experience, but the prolific striker thinks otherwise
- Gyan, Africa's leading scorer at the World Cup with six goals, has not played competitive football since the expiration of his contract with local outfit Legon Cities
- With Ghana pitted in Group H alongside the Korea Republic, Uruguay and Portugal, many believe Gyan will be a great addition to the Black Stars team
Ex-Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has weighed in on the clarion call for his inclusion in the national team to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Gyan, Ghana's leading top scorer, has been absent from the Black Stars since the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and has not played active football in over 12 months.
Despite his long absence from competitive football, some sections of the populace, including politicians and connoisseurs of the game, have called for his inclusion in the squad that represents Ghana at the Mundial.
However, Gyan, who stressed he has not retired yet, disclosed he has to condition himself physically and play active football in order to merit a call-up.
“For now, I have not retired but I think I have to earn the call-up. I have to train, stay fit, get a team to play and perform to earn a place in the team. I don’t have to be in the team at all cost because of what I have done, it doesn’t work that way” he told Peace FM as quoted by Football Ghana.
When quizzed about his current situation being similar to Cameroon's Roger Milla in 1990, Gyan said,
“It’s possible, it has happened before. I was youug when Cameroon took Roger Milla to the World Cup even though he was not playing actively but much will depend on me, the most important thing is, that I have to be fit physically but I feel I am a naturally gifted player who can do anything on the field. Physically, I don’t think am ready. If I have to play competitive football, I have to step up my game to be fit” he ended.
