Chris Hughton has picked former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as his greatest Ghanaian footballer of all-time.

The former Chelsea midfielder played 59 times for Ghana and was an instrumental member of the team that first qualified the country to the World Cup in 2006.

Although Essien did not win any trophy with the Black Stars, Hughton places him on top of his list of favourite Ghanaian players.

“My all-time greatest Ghanaian footballer would be Michael Essien. One because he was in London so I saw a lot of him when he played,” Hughton said as quoted by Pulse.

“I had the pleasure to meet him on a few occasions and to speak with him but he was a very influential player in I think what was the turnaround in what we are seeing now at Chelsea.”

Michael Essien played for Ghana at the World Cup in 2006 and in 2014. He also represented Ghana at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and at the tournament in 2010.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Michael Essien has finally opened up on his famous goal against Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008.

The Chelsea legend connected brilliantly to a Sulley Muntari freekick halfway in the box as Ghana defeated Morocco in Accra.

The well-worked goal left many wondering if it was a training ground routine, but Essien after 14 took to social media to state it wasn't planned.
