  • Romelu Lukaku has been branded as Chelsea's worst-ever signing by former Blue Glen Johnson

Retired English defender Glen Johnson has slammed Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool full-back described the Belgian striker, who is currently on loan at Inter Milan, as the worst signing in Chelsea's history.

Lukaku rejoined Chelsea for a colossal fee of £97.5million but his fairytale return to Stamford Bridge did not go according to plan with the Belgian scoring 15 goals in 43 appearances for the Blues across all competitions.

“At the moment, yes [he is Chelsea’s worst-ever signing], purely because of the amount of money, the size of the deal and just how bad it was." He told Genting via The Sun.
“I just think the Premier League is too fast for him. When he’s at his best, he just tries to keep things simple, he doesn’t get involved in the game too much and he’s between the goalposts and doesn’t move."
“In the last few years though, he’s been trying to become a footballing striker which he isn’t good at."
“I think he needs to get back to basics and realise what he’s good at. He’s more than capable and can score goals but I think he was trying to do too much in the wrong areas.”

Lukaku himself admitted his big-money return to Chelsea was a “mistake.”

Lukaku admits Chelsea return was a 'mistake'

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Romelu Lukaku has confessed that the worst mistake of his football career was leaving Inter Milan for Chelsea last season.

The 29-year-old swapped Inter Milan for Chelsea in a deal worth £97.5million last season. However, the Belgian international rued his return to the Premier League and apologized to the fans of Inter Milan.

He has been shipped out on loan to Inter and the former Manchester United player is poised to redeem himself at his old stomping grounds.
