  • Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has written a wonderful message to Chelsea fans as his disastrous five-year spell comes to an end
  • Drinkwater arrived from Leicester City in 2017 but failed to cement his place in the Chelsea squad and was shipped off to a number of loan spells
  • The midfielder has agreed that the transfer was a business move gone wrong for both Chelsea and him and has regretted not showing his true potential at Stamford Bridge

Danny Drinkwater has penned a heartfelt and honest message to Chelsea fans in a farewell letter. Drinkwater is set to depart Chelsea after a poor five years in London.

The Englishman will join the books as one of the worst transfers in history. He was signed from Leicester City in 2017 for a fee of around 35 million euros.

It was expected that he would replicate his midfield dominance with N’Golo Kante. The duo formed a solid partnership at Leicester that saw them march to the historic 2016 English Premier League triumph.

But things took a turn for the worse and regular games became hard to come by. Drinkwater has not played a competitive game for Chelsea in four years.

He has had disappointing loan spells at Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and Reading. His only silverware with Chelsea was in 2018 when Antonio Conte led the Blues to FA Cup victory.

Drinkwater wrote on his Instagram account:

My time at Chelsea has come to an end…actually feels really strange writing this. Me, the club and fans are hugely disappointed with the outcome there is no doubt about that.
Injuries, how I have been treated, mistakes I have made, issues off the pitch, lack of game time…the list of excuses could be endless but I would not and cannot change what’s happened.
I am going to look at the positives over the past 5 years, I have played with great players, been coached by awesome managers, worked with some brilliant staff, met some fantastic people, lived in some beautiful places, travelled the world and won some more silverware.
Football is a fantastic sport but this for both parties was a business move gone wrong. It’s as black and white as that. To the Chelsea fans I apologize for how this has turned out I would have loved for u to see me at my best in that shirt doing what I love. All the best
