  • Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been given an ultimatum to agree to sell the club or it seizes to be an entity
  • All assets of the Russian billionaire have been frozen by the UK government, but a special licence allows Chelsea to complete the football season
  • Reports have it that the licence which expires on May 31 will not be renewed, meaning Abramovich must sell it and walk away without nothing

English Premier League club Chelsea could seize to exist as owner Roman Abramovich has been given an ultimatum to sell the outfit with the next 81 days, SunSport reports.

The UK government announced that all assets of the Russian billionaire have been frozen as he was placed on the sanctions list.

And shirt sponsors Three have ended their £40m deal with the Stamford Bridge side who could also lose £66million as their Premier League and Uefa prize money are likely to be withheld.

Although a special licence will allow the club to play until the end of the season, it will not be renewed unless the club owner agrees to sell it and then walk away without a penny.

Chelsea’s licence lapses on May 31. The PM’s official spokesman said as per Mirror:

“A specific licence can be granted to allow any sale to proceed.
“But under no circumstance would any sale allow Roman Abramovich to profit from that or take any money from that sale.”

Under the licence, Chelsea, with a £333million-a-year wage bill and around 1,000 staff, can continue in business and pay wages.

Chelsea fans throw support for Abramovich

Meanwhile, Chelsea fans were defiant ahead of the Premier League clash against Norwich last night.

The Blues beat Norwich City at Carrow Road, thanks to goals from Trevoh Chalobah, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz. However, it was the team's supporters who were the centre of attention.

Known associates of his like Abramovich have since been sanctioned politically and economically on the global stage by various entities as a means of isolating Putin.

Chelsea now rely on matchday revenue

Sports Brief earlier reported that Chelsea has been reduced to relying on matchday revenue for the foreseeable future after club owner Roman Abramovic was sanctioned by the UK in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovic was one of seven oligarchs who was slapped with the sanctions as his assets were frozen, effectively halting his plans to sell Chelsea.

The sanctions are also set to have significant ramifications on the day-to-day activities of Chelsea.

Chelsea can, however still fulfil their remaining fixtures of the season thanks to a special licence, but the club will have to cope without a large chunk of their fans as a result of the sanctions.
