La Liga President Accused of Providing False Evidence Against Barcelona in Referee Scandal

Barcelona could yet escape getting fined by prosecutors in their ongoing bribery and corruption case following payments made to a referee official between 2001 and 2017.

The Catalans have been handed some good news in the Negreira case after it emerged that the evidence brought by La Liga president Javier Tebas against the club is false.

According to Tribuna, Tebas demanded that two ex-Barcelona presidents Josep Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell must be investigated as their surnames appeared in the evidence he provided.

However, the evidence which is a handwritten document belonging to a deceased former director of referees provided by Tebas is acclaimed to be false and had nothing to do with the Negreira case.

Tebas presented the document to prosecutors on 22nd February in a bid that Barcelona could be indicted for bribery and corruption even though the family of the deceased director have confirmed that the surnames in the document provided by the La Liga boss did not belong to the ex-Barcelona presidents.

UEFA president reluctant on possible punishments

Meanwhile, UEFA president Alexander Ceferin admits that the allegations against Barcelona are “extremely serious” and need to be looked into carefully, Goal reports.

Ceferin revealed investigations need to be concluded before the European football governing body will know what action to take next on the Catalan club.

Barcelona continues to plead their innocence, insisting that they have done nothing wrong after payments the club made to Enriquez Negreira who was the former vice-president of the Referees Committee in Spain between 2001 and 2018 have become the subject of a potential corruption scandal.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Barcelona are unperturbed by the news of UEFA might likely ban them from the Champions League following allegations of making illegal payments to a former referee official in Spain.

It was claimed that Barcelona made several payments to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spain's refereeing committee, for match official information and analysis.

UEFA had threatened to throw the Catalan giants out of its competition including the Champions League after it opened its own investigation into the allegations.
