Gerard Pique’s next big plan is to contest for the Barcelona presidency sometime in the future, after officially announcing his retirement from football.

The 35-year-old defender, who is a cult hero for the Spanish giants, decided to hang up his boots after falling down the pecking order at Camp Nou this season.

According to ESPN, Pique has now confirmed that Barcelona presidency appeals to him and he intends to help Catalan club reach its full potential.

"I'm sure it will appeal to me at one point, but not right now. Not training every day will give me the opportunity to focus on other things. In the future, we will see, but I would like to help the club of my life maximise the potential it has."

Pique rips into Madrid president

Meanwhile, Pique harshly criticised Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over his handling of the proposed Super League, which has received heavy backlash from stakeholders.

Pique confessed he still held Perez in high regard, but admitted he was disappointed in the Los Blancos boss for not knowing what he wanted to achieve with the Super League, Football Espana reports.

Pique has never hidden his stance on the Super League, despite Barcelona being one of the founding members of the idea.

Barcelona forces Pique to un-retire

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Pique’s retirement from football was put on hold by Barcelona, after the 35-year-old defender was listed in the Spanish giant’s team to face Osasuna.

Barcelona tackled Osasuna at Estadio El Sadar, as Xavi’s men looked to extend their lead at the top of the La Liga table following Real Madrid’s shock loss.

Pique's inclusion for La Blaugrana was the result of numerous injuries, which had depleted the squad ahead of the game.
