Move to Manchester United collapsed in July
According to 90min, the Blaugrana will try to sell the midfielder who is admired by major European teams, especially Chelsea and Manchester United. Deferred wages of €17 million stalled his move to United in July. De Jong was eager to be reunited with his former manager Erik Ten Hag and his former teammate Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford.
Furthermore, the Spanish giants threatened legal action over the midfielder's contract. The club said that his current contract, given by the previous administration was illegal. A two-year extension until 2026 is reported to have reduced his salary for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons. As a result €18 million was left to be spread across the following four campaigns.
