- Italian side Lecce are closing in on a deal to sign Samuel Umtiti on a season-long loan from FC Barcelona
Barcelona’s financial troubles have been well documented, and there’s no end in sight to the difficulties for the Blaugrana.
While they’re desperate to lessen the wage bill, the club may soon have to pay out more money to one of their stars.
As reported by Barca Universal, the Catalan giants actually owe Samuel Umtiti a whopping €52 million as per the terms of his contract.
Umtiti’s previous contract with Barcelona was due to expire in 2023, but the club were desperate to register Ferran Torres and agreed on a new deal with Umtiti, with the agreement that he would defer some of his wages.

He then signed until 2026, with the club agreeing to pay him €52 million spread out until 2026.
€40 million of that is believed to be in fixed payments, while the remaining €12 million was due to be paid in variables. If Barcelona were to sell the player now, they would have to pay him out before he leaves.
The Catalan giants have therefore opted to loan out Umtiti instead.
As noted by Football Espana, Umtiti is nearing a loan to the Italian side, Lecce. The deal is not finalised yet, but current terms will see Barcelona pay Umtiti’s salary while on loan in Italy.
This would defeat the club’s purpose of trying to lessen their wage bill, and Barca is trying to negotiate financial compensation with the Italian side for each game Umtitii plays.
