"We knew we needed a good start to give us the confidence and to give us the momentum and the team executed the plan to the T," Ellis said.

Ellis exclaimed that it was a massive three points and set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

Banyana next faces Burundi on Thursday before tackling the other team in the group, Botswana, on Sunday.

Ellis urged her charges to remain level-headed for the rest of the tournament, despite the win over their biggest rivals. Banyana beat the Super Falcons in the group stages of the 2018 edition of the tournament before losing to them in the final that year on penalties.

Two quick goals in the second half from Jermaine Seoposenwe in the 60th minute and Hildah Magaia three minutes later gave South Africa a comfortable lead against the Super Falcons after a disappointing goalless first half.
