South Africa has shown its hand ahead of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations to be hosted by Morocco next month.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis announced her final squad of 23 players earlier today to do duty at the 13th iteration of the tournaments. Twelve teams divided in three groups will vie for the title that Nigeria more or less calls their own, having won it 10 times out of 12 occasions since the first edition that was held in 1991.

Goal reported that all the semifinalists at the tournament will qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

According to SABC Sport, Ellis trimmed the squad down from 33 players, with the likes of Thembi Kgatlana, Refiloe Jane and Jermaine Seoposenwe making the cut. Banyana’s opening AWCON game is against Nigeria on 4 July, with fixtures to follow against Burundi and Botswana to round up Group C, from which the top two will proceed to the quarterfinal stage.

Banyana has lost the five previous finals they have been to, including against their nemesis the Super Falcons in Ghana on penalties in 2018 in Ghana.

South Africa's women's national football team is the country's best senior side in the sports, and now they have sights for major honours to prove it.

As reported by Sports Brief, having sailed into the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco in July, they are targeting a first-ever title in the competition.

They came very close to doing so in Nigeria back in 2018, but lost to the queens of the tournament Nigeria.
