FootballBafana Bafana Great Lucas Radebe Worries About National Football Team, Calls for a SAFA Leadership Change
- Lucas Radebe has joined in the increasingly loud choruses demanding an overhaul of the South African Football Association's leadership
- This comes amid the controversial race for the presidency of the organisation intensifies, with the elective conference around the corner
- With Bafana Bafana's alarmingly fast descent into descent at the centre of the politics underpinning the contest, Radebe did not hold back
Lucas Radebe has given his opinion on the state of the South African Football Association amid an intense race for the presidency of the organisation.
The former Bafana Bafana defender and captain has called for a change in the leadership of SAFA so that the troubled organisation can right itself again. Incumbent president Danny Jordaan is being challenged by his deputy in the form of Ria Ledwaba, with the showdown set for next elective congress.
As was reported on Sport24, Radebe was favoured to replace Jordaan for his position, but his inexperience in administration and the politics that come with this scuppered his ambitions. Jordaan is in the ninth year of a tumultuous tenure that has since Bafana be reduced to an afterthought on the continental football stage let alone the world's, underlined by the now normal fact of them failing to qualify for tournaments.
Radebe told Kick Off:
"I still believe and strongly believe, and I will always say that change is needed. Change is good in order for football to progress. In order for football to be at a level where we can compete, not just compete but be consistent in competing, be consistent in developing, be consistent in achieving.
"I think we've got to look to who is in leadership, to who [is] in the power running the game, and I believe footballers have to have a conversation on the future of the game. Especially in the country where [there] is worrying at the moment, because I mean what we see and what we know about Bafana Bafana or what we know about football in the country.
"Yes, we have development academies, we have got development but do you see anything developing? Why we don't have players overseas?"
