BoxingBafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos 'Angry' at France Coach Didier Deschamps After 5-0 Thumping
- Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos joked that he was angry at his French counterpart Didier Deschamps
- This came after Les Bleus humiliated South Africa 5-0, the latter's joint record defeat in international football
- Broos said that superstar Kylian Mbappe's addition to the French starting lineup annoyed him as he tortured the hapless visitors all night
South African men's national coach Kylian Mbappe half-seriously said he was angry at his French counterpart Didier Deschamps.
France annihilated Bafana Bafana 5-0 in Lille last night, inflicting South Africa's joint-worst defeat (after Brazil in 2014) since readmission to international football. Kylian Mbappé (2), Olivier Giroud, Wissam Ben Yedder and Matteo Guendouzi all got onto the scoresheet for the French side.
According to Sport24, Mbappe's destruction of the hapless visitors made Broos wish that Deschamps had selected him for the Ivory Coast match, which he missed, instead of against Bafana
Broos said:
"I was a little bit angry on my colleague that he put Mbappe today and not Friday evening (against Ivory Coast). "He is a great player, and there are much better defenders who suffered against him; you can’t really neutralise him. He is always quick; he is technically very good, he can score.
"So, if you have such a player in your team, you play with 12, and France is already so good, and they play with 12 against us, so you know how difficult it was for us today."
He added:
"We tried to play football, and there were some moments we could do it, but again there was a big difference of level, therefore, we couldn’t do what we would like to do."
Bafana's next appointment on the international football calendar is June, when the qualifiers for the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast begin. They are yet to learn their opponents in whichever group they'll be seeded in.
