- There is no love lost between Atletico Madrid and Manchester City after the Champions League quarter-final tie
- City advanced 1-0 on aggregate after holding off the Spanish side in the second leg
- After the game, Atletico Madrid's president ironically said City played ‘pre-historic’ football because of the manner they defended against the Colchoneros
Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cezero has become the latest character to weigh in on the ongoing discussion surrounding the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Cezero, in the wake of Manchester City’s 1-0 aggregate win over Colchoneros, accused the English side of playing ‘pre-historic’ football.
Pep Guardiola’s side exhibited impressive maturity and discipline, particularly in defence, to keep out an unpredictable Atletico side across two legs of the quarter-final.
But in the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, the Citizens went out of their typical attacking character, and registered only one attempt on target in 90 minutes.
This was in contrast to Atletico’s game as the home side constantly threatened City’s goal.
In the aftermath, the Atletico Madrid president, in an ironic twist, called out City for parking the bus.
The 74-year old went to the lengths of calling Manchester City’s style of play “pre-historic”.
"It was a match that, with a bit of luck, would have taken us to the semi-finals. We were not lucky enough to score a goal and reach extra time. We are a team that has a lot of status so that someone can offend us, and in the end, it has been shown that everyone has their prehistory.” He told Marca, as quoted by Express.
"We played a good game, attacking and City yesterday played prehistory, defending and put a wall in front of their goal so they wouldn't score. Everybody has seen it. City was a completely defensive team. In the second half they shot on goal once. Yesterday it was shown that each one has their prehistory."

FootballCity enjoyed the bulk of possession, but were unable to score in the second leg. The 0-0 draw was however enough to set up a semi final clash against Real Madrid.
“Man City’s antics caused madness”
Cezero’s sentiments echoed those made by Atletico Madrid captain Koke, who claimed Manchester City were primarily to blame for the chaos that ensued after the game.
Tensions boiled over on Wednesday, April 14, during the closing stages of the clash as Manchester City clung on to a 1-0 aggregate lead to proceed to the semi-finals of the competition.
Speaking after the game, Koke said Atletico Madrid players were growing increasingly agitated by Manchester City’s gamesmanship.
