Arsenal chiefs held talks with Pep Guardiola assistant, Mikel Arteta, at his house just hours after the Gunners' 3-0 defeat to Man City on Sunday, December 15.

After the Sunday defeat, interim boss, Freddie Ljungberg, asked Arsenal board to fast track the process of appointing a permanent replacement for Unai Emery who was sacked late November.

And it now appears Arsenal are doing just that after the club’s chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and chief contract negotiator, Huss Fahmy, were spotted leaving Arteta’s house in the early hours of Monday morning, December 16.

It is believed Arteta, who spent five years at the Emirates as a player, is now Gunners' top choice candidate to succeed Emery.

Metro UK reported the club could name the Spaniard new boss in the next 48 hours, ending days of speculation.

Meanwhile, when asked about reports linking Arteta to the north London job, City boss, Pep Guardiola hinted the Manchester club will not stand in the former midfielder's way.

"If it happens, it will happen. When he wants to talk we are open to talk but it’s private, I don’t want to make things uncomfortable," Pep was quoted saying.
