The Sun further reports that Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is leading the line as a potential replacement for 35-year-old Schmeichel at Leicester.
Schmeichel, son of legendary goalie Peter Schmeichel, had one year remaining in his contract at Leicester, but he has opted to walk away early.
It is believed that the transfer is amicable and mutual, with no bad blood between the keeper and Leicester, a club he has served diligently for more than a decade.
He will be able to walk away for free, despite still having some time in his current contract.
While the move is highly likely, Leicester City’s inability to find a suitable replacement for Schmeichel is said to be a huge ‘stumbling block’ in the transfer.
Meanwhile, Nice set their eyes on the Dane after they failed to land Swiss international Yann Sommer.
Aside from Robert Sanchez, Leicester are also considering Arsenal’s Bernd Leno as Schmeichel’s replacement.
