The TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations 2021 kicks off in Cameroon in a few days time and the historic tournament has football lovers waiting with bated breath.

AFCON 2021 will take place in Cameroon in January having been postponed last year due to the increasing Covid19 threat to the continent.

The historic tournament has attracted the attention of football lovers worldwide, more so now with many African players plying their trade in some of the world's big leagues. Since its inception in 1957, numerous records have been set, some of which have stood the test of time.

Samuel Eto'o is the tournament's leading goalscorer, having scored 18 goals, Goal.Com reported. There is no player currently still playing that is even close to matching Eto'o.

Egypt holds the record for the most wins, having won the tournament a whopping seven times. Cameroon are the next best team winning the tournament five times. Egypt also holds the record for most consecutive wins, They won the tournament three times in a row in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Egyp will have a tough time winning an eight trophy as they face Nigeria, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in Group D, CAF Online confirmed.

Only three times have thus far defended the title. Egypt, Ghana and Cameroon all won back to back titles and Algeria will be hoping to join that elusive club.

Only three teams have thus far won the tournament in their debut appearance. They are Egypt, Ghana and South Africa. Unfortunately for South Africa, they will not be competing at next year's AFCON.

Egypt also holds the record for most appearances in the tournament at 24 while Tunisia holds the record for most consecutive appearances at 15.

Eto'o: January AFCON is a time prove greatness of African players once more

In other AFCON-related news, Cameroon is ready to host the rest of Africa next week when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) takes place, Sports Brief recently reported.

The African continental international football showpiece has had a lot of calls from foreign bodies including FIFA about a possible postponement or cancellation. With the tournament's organisers a week away from realising their dream and proving naysayers wrong, Samuel Etoo has said the AFCON will prove greatness of African players.

The FA President of the host nation noted that the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) was more than just a football tournament for the people of Africa.
