2021 in Review: Top 5 Ghanaian sporting moments, from U20 AFCON triumph to an Olympic medal

Ghana is noted for its tremendous achievements in sports and 2021 will go down as one of it's successful years, having ended a 29-year wait for an Olympic medal.

In a year full of uncertainties, including whether the AFCON U20 will be held or not, the Black Satellites defied all odds to win the tournament in Mauritania.

SportsBrief.com looks at the top five sports moments in Ghana in 2021, as we usher in the new year.

Ghana wins fourth Africa Youth Championship

The Black Satellites of Ghana, led by coach Karim Zito won Ghana's fourth Africa U20 Championship after beating Uganda 2-0 in the finals.

The Black Satellites finished third in Group C, behind Morocco and Gambia but managed to progress to the quarter finals as one of the best third placed teams.

The team then beat Cameroon on penalties before edging out Gambia to set up a final against Uganda. Captain Daniel Afriyie Barnieh netted both goals as the team were crowned champions.

Boxer Samuel Takyi wins Bronze at Tokyo Olympics

Ghana had not won an Olympic medal since the Black Meteors finished third at the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992.

Twenty-year-old boxer Samuel Takyi will end that drought in 2021 after reaching the semifinals of the flyweight to guarantee the country a medal. He defeated Colombia's David Avila Ceiber to achieve the feat.

He became the fourth boxer from Ghana to win a medal, after Clement Quartey, Eddie Blay and Prince Amartey.

Ghana beat South Africa to reach FIFA World Cup play-offs

Andre Ayew's controversial penalty earned Ghana a place in the play-offs of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana finished top of Group C ahead of South Africa, but the talking point of the match is the penalty awarded by referee Ndiaye Marguette.

South Africa ended up reporting the referee and Ghana's FA to FIFA, but their protest was dismissed.

Hasaacas Ladies reach finals of CAF Women's Champions League

Hasaacas Ladies had a very successful year, winning five out of six competitions that they participated in, including the National Women's League and the WAFU Zone B Cup.

Winning the Zone B championship helped the Ghanaian giants qualify for the maiden Africa Women's Champions League, where they swept aside all the team's in their group.

The lost the finals to South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns.

C.K Akonnor sacked as Ghana coach

With Ghana on the brink of losing out on the FIFA World Cup play-offs, Charles Kwablan Akonnor had to be shown the exit door.

Serbian trainer Milovan Rajevac was reappointed coach of the Black Stars and he is expected to lead the country to another World Cup appearance.

At the moment, his main target is to win the Africa Cup of Nations.
