Nigerians are currently reacting to the recent appointment of new Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro by the Nigerian Football Federation.

The NFF on Wednesday, December 29, confirmed the appointment of the Portuguese on Wednesday through a communique released by the media department of the football body as reported by The Punch.

Poseiro’s announcement follows the sacking of former coach of the national team Gernot Rohr who was let go following the Super Eagles’ poor display and lack of cohesion in recent World Cup qualifiers.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick prior to Poseiro’s appointment had revealed the football body consulted AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho was recommended his fellow compatriot for the Eagles job.

So here are four things you probably didn’t know about Nigeria’s new manager Jose Peseiro.

1. PLAYING CAREER

Born José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro on 4 April 1960 is a Portuguese football manager and former player.

Peseiro played in the Segunda Liga as a professional, starting his career at Sport Lisboa e Cartaxo in 1979 according to Wikipedia.

He also represented Amora FC, Clube Oriental de Lisboa, GD Samora Correia and S.C.U. Torreense, for a total of five seasons.

Peseiro retired at the end of the 1993–94 season aged 34 in the fourth division, with local club União de Santarém.

2. COACHING CAREER

Peseiro spent his first eight years as a manager in the third and fourth-tiers of Portuguese football.

In summer 1999 he was appointed at C.D. Nacional, which he helped promote to the Primeira Liga in just three seasons.

In 2003–04, Peseiro got his big break in management after he was named assistant to Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid.

Peseiro has gone on to coach clubs in Portugal, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Romania, United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.

3. TITLES WON

Despite being recommended by a serial winner in Jose Mourinho, Jose Poseiro has not done much in raking up silverware as a manager in his career.

The former Real Madrid assistant manager can only boast of two trophies as a coach since he went into management.

Poseiro won his first trophy as a manager when he won the Portuguese Cup with Braga in 2013.

The 61-year old led Egyptians Giants Al Ahly to the Egyptian Premier League title in 2016 to win his second and last trophy as a manager.

4. FAILURES

Peseiro failed to qualify Saudi Arabia for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and was sacked after losing to Syria in the AFC Asian Cup.

He also failed to get Venezuela past the group stages of the 2021 Copa America and resigned in August, having not been paid for over a year amidst the South American country’s economic crisis.

The Portuguese manager was also a losing finalist in the UEFA Cup with Sporting Lisbon in 2005 and also lost the 2016 Portuguese Cup final with FC Porto.

Peseiro signed a three-year contract with Romanian club FC Rapid București in 2008. On 2 October, after being eliminated from the UEFA Cup by VfL Wolfsburg, he was sacked only to be reinstated a few days later. He eventually resigned on 12 January 2009, after failing to agree on a new deal.

Jose Peseiro who has coached 17 teams so far in his career will be at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament with Nigeria although the NFF have disclosed Augustine Eguavoen will be in charge of the Super Eagles.
