  • SuperSport United striker Thamsanqa Gabuza tested fate when he chirped the Premier Soccer League's strictest referee Victor Gomes
  • Gomes, renowned for his inclination to hand out red cards like sweets, was in charge of United's final clash of 2021 against Cape Town City
  • A video surfaced of him chirping Gomes earlier in the year, with a follower wishing that a film crew follow him around to shoot a mockumentary

Mercurial SuperSport United striker Thamsanqa Gabuza had something of a death wish as he poked fun at the Premier Soccer League's strictest referee Victor Gomes.

A viral video on the club's Twitter page shows Gabuza jokingly chirping the whistleman ahead United's fixture against Cape Town City in Tshwane. They went on to win the match 3-2, though Gabuza was not on the scoresheet.

The match was the final one ahead of the year before the festive season recess, with Gabuza saying that his team was in a hurry to collect all three points, as well as heading for the holidays.

To much laughter from teammates and opponents alike, he implored the red-card-merchant Gomes to get the game going as soon as possible.

As expected, Mzansi fans laughed along, reminded of Gabuza's jocular nature.

@SandaCulu suggested:

"Those who are in the film or documentary industry you better get a camera man to follow Gabuza. “Life with Gabuza”. You’ll thank me later..."

@PasekaTsoaela reckons the two might be friends:

"I think Gomez and Gabuza have a very close relationship, on and off the field."

@JoemanMakashane had to be the wet blanket:

"He was lucky Gomez didn't hear him. He should have been red carded!"

Manchester United's Harry Maguire remains Mzansi's punchline as poor form continues

Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah's inclusion in Nigeria's 2021 African Cup of Nations' squad has been met praise and glee.

The 23-year-old has impressed since joining the Buccaneers in August from the Nigerian Premier League's Akwa United, and it was only a matter of time before he caught the eye of Super Eagles' selectors.

He had made only two appearances for the national team thus far since making his debut back in 2019.
