FootballFifa Issues Statement After Sports Cs Disbanded Fkf, Threatens to Ban Kenya
- Less than 24 hours after the Ministry of Sports announced the disbandment of the Football Kenya Federation, FIFA has responded
- The world governing body has threatened to take up the FKF-Sports Ministry saga to the Bureau of FIFA Council in a move that could see Kenya slapped with a ban
- FIFA however handed Kenya a lifeline by offering to mediate talks between the FKF and the Ministry of Sports
Word governing body FIFA, in a letter dated November 11, has raised concern over the Ministry of Sports’ move to form a caretaker committee at the expense of the embattled Football Kenya Federation.
In the letter signed by Chief Member Associations Officer Kenny Jean-Marie, FIFA threatened to take up the matter with the Bureau of FIFA Council.
If this happens, it could see Kenyan football slapped with a hefty ban.
“We would like to address our concern with respect to the announcement by the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Sports of Kenya Amb Amina Mohammed,” FIFA said in the letter
“As a matter of fact, we deem fit to highlight that all FIFA member associations, including the FKF, are statutorily required to manage their affairs independently and without influence of any third parties,”
FIFA went on to say the move to appoint a caretaker committee was “contrary to the principles” and the body would be forced to impose a ban on Kenyan football.
There was however a lifeline, as the football governing body expressed its willingness to hold three-way talks with the FKF and the Ministry of Sports on the same.
Therefore, we kindly ask you to inform the Cabinet Secretary that in the event her decision to appoint a FKF Caretaker Committee and correlated secretariat was to be upheld, we would have no other choice than to submit the present matter to the Bureau of FIFA Council for consideration and decision,"
"Finally, and as referred to in the Cabinet Secretary's letter of 18 October 2021, we would like to emphasize on our willingness to hold a meeting with the FKF and the Ministry of Sport as soon as possible so as to address any concern both sides may have and, all together, to decide on a way forward for the sake of Kenyan football,"

Football"We thank you for taking note of the above and kindly ask you to communicate the contents of this letter to the competent authorities."
Still in office
Despite the government deploying police officers and the caretaker committee set to occupy Kandanda House from Friday, November 12, the Football Kenya Federation maintains it is still in charge of running affairs involving Kenyan football.
A defiant Nick Mwendwa came out guns blazing on Thursday, subtly hinting that FIFA would eventually intervene on the matter.
“We will remain in office, FIFA will speak and we will continue running football in the country. These are just ‘clouds’ from someone who does not understand football. She really wants to run football in the country but she does not understand the game and that is a mistake, a big mistake, it is unfortunate that the game has reached this point,” Mwendwa said during a presser at a hotel on Thursday.
The FKF would then follow it up with an official statement rejecting the caretaker committee.
