FootballEx-Arsenal Coach among 2-Man Favourites to Take Over at Newcastle
- Unai Emery is the most preferred candidate by Newcastle’s new bosses
- The Spaniard is currently boss at Villareal and has distanced himself from the job
- According to reports, Newcastle have narrowed down their options to Emery and former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe
Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has emerged as a favourite to take over at Newcastle United amid a Saudi takeover.
Eddie Howe, the former Bournemouth boss, is the other candidate believed to be on the shortlist of the Newcastle job.
With pressure growing on Newcastle’s new owners to appoint a top manager, Unai Emery emerged as a top target last week.
Newcastle currently sit 19th on the table, with a mere six points from their opening nine games.
Emery is currently boss at Villareal and in the press conference ahead of a crunch Champions League clash against Young Boys, the Spaniard was asked about potentially taking over as manager at Newcastle.
Addressing rumours linking him with the Magpies, Emery said: "I don't know anything about Newcastle."
Emery won the Europa League with Villareal last season, beating Manchester United in the final.
He has enjoyed majority of his success as a football manager in Spain, winning three Europa League titles with Sevilla.
He also won league titles in France when he was in charge of Paris Saint Germain, but losing the title to Monaco in 2016-17 severely damaged his reputation.
Emery moved to Arsenal in 2018 to replace Arsene Wenger but endured a difficult time at the Emirates. He however managed to guide the Gunners to the Europa League final where they lost to Chelsea.
Former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre is also believed to have been among the favourites to take over at Newcastle but Emery is the preferred choice.
