- Liverpool had to dig deep to see off relegation-threatened Newcastle United

- Mo Salah also scored his 22nd goal of the season to help his side remain a point behind league leaders Manchester City
Liverpool closed the gap on league leaders Manchester City thanks to a comprehensive 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Thursday, December 16.
The Reds had to make some adjustments in defence as Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho were both absent due to suspected positive COVID-19 tests.
Regardless, there was nothing wrong with Liverpool going forward as two quickfire goals from Diogo Jota and Mohammed Salah put Liverpool in charge of the game after Jonjo Shelvey initially have Newcastle the lead.
Trent Alexander Arnold then made sure of the result late in the second half with a beautiful strike from outside the box to ensure his side walked away with all three points.
Liverpool neck to neck with Manchester City
Liverpool had to dig deep in their last two Premier League games, which they both won by a 1-0 scoreline.
Against Newcastle, however, the Reds looked much more comfortable despite falling behind when Shelvey scored following a quick break from Eddie Howe’s men.
Jota’s equaliser had hints of controversy in it as the Portuguese scored when Isaac Hayden had gone down in the box with a head injury, but his shot after Martin Dubravka saved an effort counted as an equaliser.
Minutes later and Salah lashed home his 22nd of the season to turn the game on its head.
But perhaps the moment of the game was the rocket from Trent Alexander Arnold, whose thunderous strike from outside the box left his team mate Thiago in awe.
Newcastle remain 19th on the log and in genuine danger of being relegated while for Liverpool, they marked a special milestone as the win was their 2000th in top flight.
