Substitute Divock Origi left it very late for the Reds with a strike at the dying minutes as Jurgen Klopp stormed to the top of the table, at least temporarily.

In a game that looked like it would be a case of Liverpool ruing their missed chances, the Reds showed sheer determination and grit to keep pushing to the last minute.

It must be said that Wolves had done an exemplary job in keeping out the Premier League’s highest-scoring side so far this season, and they were well on course for a famous draw.

Liverpool particularly came into the match in frightening form, having scored twice or more in their last 18 games in all competitions.

But they looked frustrated on the day, and the game was meandering towards Jurgen Klopp’s men’s first 0-0 draw since their clash against Real Madrid in April.

This is not to say that Liverpool did not create chances, as former Wolves man Diogo Jota had his side’s first glance at goal with a header that went narrowly off target.

Mohammed Salah also had a brilliant chance to score a tap in but was expertly thwarted by Romain Saiss.

Liverpool pressed on for a goal in the second half and Jota should have made more of his chance as he saw his effort blocked off the line by Conor Coady after leaving the goalkeeper stranded.

Despite the frustrations, Liverpool continued with their attacking intent and with only 60 seconds of added time to play, up stepped Origi.

The Belgian’s brilliant first touch and finish from Mo Salah’s cut back somehow found the back of the net to ensure the Reds went back to Liverpool with all three points.

While a draw for Liverpool would not have been a disastrous result by any stretch, a win sprung them above Chelsea, who stumbled in the earlier game.

Chelsea slip in title race

West Ham's winner against Chelsea came from an unlikely source as Arthur Masuaku’s cross late in the game somehow found its way past Edouard Mendy, who generally had a miserable afternoon at the London Stadium.

In all honesty, West Ham deserves plaudits for holding on in the game when they went behind twice against a frightening Chelsea side.
