The 2021 Golden Player of the Year Award has been presented to Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski by Italian outlet Tuttosport, Bundesliga reports.
Tuttosport issued the award to the Polish striker as the best player over the age of 21 in the last calendar year.
Complete Sports are reporting that the former Borussia Dortmund striker also received the accolade last year as well.
He beat former Barcelona captain and Argentina legend Lionel Messi as well as Italian midfielder Jorginho to the award.
It was gathered that Lewandowski was chosen by a jury of former stars including Lothar Matthäus, Andriy Shevchenko, Hristo Stoichkov, Luca Toni, Samuel Eto’o and Rui Costa.
Having played a major part in Bayern winning six titles the previous year, this time Lewandowski’s case was made by his record-breaking 41 Bundesliga goals, surpassing the total set by the legendary Gerd Müller 49 years previously.
Lewandowski named among 10 nominees for The Best FIFA Award
Meanwhile, the world’s football governing body FIFA has revealed the candidates shortlisted for The Best FIFA Football Awards 2021, the winner of which will be revealed at an online ceremony on January 17, 2022.
A ten-man list of nominees was unveiled on FIFA website which include Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
The pair have dominated both the FIFA awards and Ballon d’Or in the last one and a half decade, but that of this year will be tightly contested with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski also on the list.
Although he was denied the Ballon d’Or last year as the award did not hold due to the spread of the pandemic, Polish star Lewandowski won the Fifa Best Player award last year as he will look forward to winning it again.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been named in a five-man shortlist for the FIFA best goalkeeper of 2021 award.
The world’s football governing body announced on its website that the award ceremony will hold on January 17, while voting is now open to the public.
The Senegalese national team goalkeeper has been impressive since joining Premier League side Chelsea last year helping them to the Champions League title this year.
