Top African Goalkeeper Considered Best in Africa Lost His Life At a Bar On This Day 50 Years Ago

On November 2, 1971, exactly 50 years ago, Ghana was thrown into a deep state of mourning following the sudden death of a 32-year-old sportsman named Robert Mensah.

TheGuardian, in a publication from 2008 indicates that the brilliant Ghanaian footballer died after an incident at an Akpeteshie bar during an altercation with a 31-year-old electrician called Isaac Melfah.

Isaac had stabbed the famous Ghanaian superstar with a broken bottle after which Robert, the victim, spent a few days in pain at the hospital before finally giving up the ghost.

Robert Mensah was at the very peak of his career at the time this happened as he was declared the second-best African player that same year at the awards ceremony.

Robert Mensah's legacy

He was known for his famous cap which he wore during every match and was the best African goalkeeper at the time who could even be seen reading newspapers during a match to mock his opponents.

Mensah was largely controversial in Ghanaian football and would mock opposition players by reading a newspaper whilst goal-tending.

Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast was named after the legendary Ghanaian goalkeeper and songs were composed to caution people against alcohol shortly after his death.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that DanielAmokachi has reiterated that Odion Ighalo's return to the Super Eagles will not in any way hinder the progress of young players in the national team, Complete Sports.

The Al-Shabab striker has been linked with a return to the national team and some fans believe the veteran striker would distract upcoming players in the team.

Gernot Rohr has named the former Nigerian international Super Eagles 40-man provisional list for the Qatar 2022 qualifiers against Cape Verde and Liberia in November.

Garba Lawal supports Ighalo's return to the national team

Legit.ng also reported that Garba Lawal has stated that retired Nigerian international Odion Ighalo is still relevant to the Super Eagles, AOI Football.

The 32-year-old who currently plies his trade with Saudi Arabian out Al-Shabab has been in good scoring form for his side in the new season, scoring eight goals in nine matches.

The former Man United striker called it quits after Nigeria came third at the AFCON 2019 tournament and was named the top marksman of the competition with five goals.
