"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season, subject to work visa requirements," the club said in a statement confirming the appointment.
"Following this period, Ralf and the club have agreed that he will continue in a consultancy role for a further two years," United added.
Rangnick's immediate assignment will be to lead United back to the top four as he hopes to win at least one title.
The Old Trafford dwellers are still firmly in contention in two competitions including the Champions League and the FA Cup.
