The tournament, which concluded on Tuesday, November 23, saw Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal lift the trophy for the fourth time thanks to a 2-0 victory over South Korean outfit Pohang Steelers.

It is an impressive feat for Olunga to emerge top scorer, especially because he only made his debut in the AFC Champions League in April 2021.

He scored nine goals in the tournament, with all of his strikes coming in Group “C” of the West Region held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The AFC Champions League is a 40-team tournament that took place from April 13 to November 23.

Olunga’s numbers in AFC Champions League

For his maiden goal in the competition, the 27-year old Kenyan international bagged a goal in his side’s 2-0 win against Iraqi side Al Shorta on April 15.

He would go on to score in the 1-1 draw against Al Alhi Saudi three days later, before grabbing an impressive hat trick against Iranian giants Esteghlal as his Al Duhail side claimed a crucial 4-3 victory.

Olunga would then score once in a 2-1 defeat to Al Shorta before scoring his final goal of the competition against Al Ahli Saudi.

Unfortunately, his strikes were not enough to save his side as they exited in the group stage.

Olunga was a goal better than Jeonbuk Hyundai forward Gustavo, whose side went all the way to the quarter-final of the competition.

The pair was followed closely by Modou Barrow from Gambia, who bagged six goals.

Olunga’s side are guaranteed of playing in next season’s AFC Champions League as well after finishing their domestic season in second place, behind leaders Al Sadd.

Wanyama wins Canadian Championship

In Canada, another Kenyan, Victor Wanyama, put the country on the map after captaining the Major League Soccer side to a 1-0 win over Toronto FC in the Canadian Cup final.

Montreal were largely the dominant team Saputo Stadium but had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock.
