FootballSadio Mane Scores Wonder Goal As Liverpool Beat Atletico Madrid in Champions League Battle
- Liverpool on Wednesday night, November 3, defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0 in Champions League game at Anfield
- Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane scored the two goals that gave Liverpool the win over the Spanish side in this game
- As things stand, Liverpool have now qualified for the Champions League knockout stages with two games remaining
Liverpool stormed into the Champions League last 16 after a comprehensive 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid in an interesting Group B encounter.
The Reds bagged some early goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane to set themselves up for victory, with right back Trent Alexander Arnold getting both goals.
Any hopes of Atletico Madrid getting back into the game were quashed when Felipe Luiz was shown a red card in the 36th minute for taking a swipe at Mane’s heels.
Liverpool enjoyed the support of a raucous crowd, who took some tension off the home side, who have developed a fierce rivalry with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in recent seasons.
And it only took 13 minutes for the Reds to break the deadlock, with Alexander-Arnold putting it on a plate for Diogo Jota to fire home the opener.
Minutes later and Liverpool were 2-0 up, again courtesy of the right back Arnold who whipped in a menacing cross-shot which was slotted home thanks to Mane’s alertness.
Atletico thought they had pulled a goal back after former Red Luis Suarez found the back of the net but his goal was eventually chopped off after review by VAR for offside.
Liverpool had chances to completely kill the game off but they could not add to their two first half goals as they advanced to the last 16 with two games of the group to spare.
The win not only ensured qualification but also extended Jurgen Klopp’s side’s unbeaten start to the new season to 16 games.
If we are to date back into last season, Liverpool have not tasted defeat in 25 matches, with their last loss coming at the hands of Real Madrid in April 6 in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
