Humphrey Kayange to Be Inducted Into World Rugby Hall of Fame

• Kayange is known for his immense contribution towards the Shujaa team
• He helped Shujaa clinch their first title in the World Rugby Sevens in Singapore in a monumental moment for Kenya
• The Kenya Sevens Legend also featured for Kenya’s rugby team in their debut Olympics campaign in Rio 2016

Kenya Sevens legend is among six high-profile athletes who will be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

The World Rugby Hall of Fame was introduced in 2006 and on Wednesday, October 27, the six inductees for 2021 were named.

The inductees excel within two themes: rugby sevens and the Olympic Games.

Kayange played an integral role back in 2016 to help Shujaa clinch their maiden Main Cup title at the World Rugby Sevens tour in Singapore.

He was also crucial in the national team’s surge back to the Olympics, and was a prominent figure in the side that participated in the country’s first Olympics in Rio 2016.

Away from the pitch, Kayange, along with RWC Sevens 2009 winning captain McAfee, helped push the agenda to have Rugby 7s programme included in the Olympics to the International Olympic Committee members

The other names to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2021 include

Osea Kolinisau - an icon of Fijian rugby who having led the sevens team to Olympic glory in Rio in 2016

Huriana Manuel-Carpenter - a strong-willed female rugby star who represented New Zealand in both the 7s and 15s.

Cheryl McAfee (Australia) – She is famous for leading her country to glory in the inaugural women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens competition in Dubai in March 2009.

Will Carling (England) – He is an English former rugby union player who presided over one of the most successful periods in the team’s history.

Jim Telfer (Scotland) – a former Headmaster who won 25 caps for Scotland, and went on to become one of the world’s most revered coaches in rugby.

Speaking on the induction of the six legends, World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said as quoted by World Rugby:

“On behalf of World Rugby, I would like to congratulate our six Hall of Fame inductees, who did not just make their mark on the field of play, but who has played a significant role in advancing the sport.

This marked another notable milestone for Kayange, who was also elected to the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission.

During the Mashujaa Day celebrations, Kayange was also among the tens of Kenyan sports legends to be recognised by President Uhuru Kenyatta as a national hero.
