Villarreal vs Man United: Solskjaer Breaks Silence After Europa League Final Heartbreak

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he is not going to shift any blame to his players in the wake of Man United's Europa League final defeat to Villarreal.

United were firm favourites to lift the European title in Gdansk, Poland, on the night of Wednesday, May 26, only for them to suffer a disappointing loss.

While reacting to the defeat, Solskjaer admitted he was disappointed with some of his senior players for failing to put in a great shift but was quick to mention he was not going to shoulder the blame on anyone.

"You know you’ve got players with high quality there. We started with loads of goalscorers and match-winners and we felt and hoped that was going to give us the upper hand," Metro UK quoted Ole saying.

"I’ve been delighted with the effort, desire, determination of all the players. I can’t fault them at all and we’ve probably done as well as anyone could imagine," he continued.

The Norwegian went on to use the opportunity to send the United board a summer transfer message, divulging the club needs at least three new signings to compete favourably next season.

"But as I’ve said, two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether is important for us to go even further," the tactician added.

The Red Devils had an arguably successful campaign which also saw them seal a second-place finish in the Premier League.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Spanish League giants Villarreal have emerged Europa League champions after beating Manchester United 11-10 on penalties.

The game was settled by the spot kicks after both sides played a 1-1 draw in the regulation period with Gerard Moreno and Edinson Cavani scoring for either side.

Moreno opened the scoring for the La Liga team one minute before the half-hour mark as the duo of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly were caught off guard by the attacker.

But a 55th-minute equaliser from the former PSG forward ensured the game stretch into penalties at the Polsat Plus Arena in Gdansk.

Geronimo Rulli was the hero for Villarreal after saving his fellow goalkeeper David De Gea's spot-kick to put an end to the marathon between the two sides.
