Carragher in recent weeks have been heavily critical of the Portuguese star labelling him a “Passenger” during games for Manchester United due to his lack of work rate and not always helping the team defensively.

Ronaldo who re-joined Manchester United from Juventus last summer and is the club’s top scorer this campaign with thirteen goals from eighteen games played already this season.

Jamie Carragher however believes Ronaldo would struggle to impress in new manager Ralf Ragnick’s high-pressure football system in United if his work rate doesn’t improve.

According to Dailypost.ng, Mikael Silvestre has however leaped to the defense of Cristiano Ronaldo, calling Carragher’s comments “absolute rubbish” and has backed the former Real Madrid star to succeed in his second spell at Old Trafford.

"This comment about him being a problem is absolute rubbish. Look at the ratio of goals scored, chances created since the start of the season. He wants to help, wants to win trophies. He didn't come to United to relax pre-retirement, it's an even bigger challenge than what he faced at his previous clubs," Silvestre told the Daily Star.
"He left United after winning the Ballon d’Or, winning the Premier League and being a top player. He knew there would be questions asked of him and what he can bring but he’s a leader.
"He doesn’t wear the armband, but he shows the way, and everything has been positive in what he’s done.”

Ronaldo was an instrumental figure in Manchester United’s Champions League campaign this season scoring in five of the six group stage games to lead the Red Devils to the Round of 16.
