2021 is gradually coming to an end and it is a year filled with some interesting sporting activities as Lionel Messi will not forget that he won his first trophy with Argentina which is the Copa America.

Despite winning many titles with Barcelona where he started his football career more than 20 years ago, Lionel Messi waited until 2021 to be decorated with the national team.

Many good and ugly things have happened in the year 2021, and we shall be taking a look at some of the football stars who have passed away.

1. Jimmy Greaves

Jimmy was a World Cup winner with England in 1966 and he remains Tottenham's leading goalscorer and scored a record 357 goals in the English top flight.

The Englishman was born in 1940 and died on September 19, 2021.

2. Gerd Muller

Muller was a German professional footballer. A striker renowned for his clinical finishing, especially in and around the six-yard box.

He was born in 1945 and died on August 15, 2021.

3. Roger Hunt

He won the World Cup with England in 1966. Liverpool's all-time league goalscorer with 244. Hunt was born in 1938 and died in September 2021.

4. Ray Kennedy

Kennedy scored 71 goals in 212 games for Arsenal, winning the First Division and FA Cup double and he died on November 30, 2021.

5. Phil Dwyer

Phil spent 16 years with Cardiff and holds the club record for most appearances, having played 575 games for the Bluebirds. He also won 10 caps for Wales.

Sad day In English football as World Cup winner, Liverpool top goalscorer dies

Earlier, Sportsbrief reported how had reported how Liverpool's second most prolific scorer and former England international Roger Hunt has died at the age of 83.

Hunt was part of the Three Lions squad that won their first and only World Cup in the 1966 edition where he scored three goals in the group stages.

His 244 goals for Liverpool was only bettered by Ian Rush during his 11-year spell with the Merseyside club.
