Kenyan runner Benson Kiplangat has put the country on the global map after storming to victory to win gold in the 5000m at the ongoing World U20 Championships.

Kiplangat finished ahead of Ethiopia's Tadese Worku to emerge first, with Levy Kibet settling for bronze after sealing a third-place finish.

The youngster unleashed a lethal last lap kick to win the race and Kenya's first title of championships being hosted in Nairobi.

He clocked a personal best of 13:20.37 to bag the gold medal, with the time posted just 0.28 ahead of Worku who settled for silver.

World U20 Championships puts Kenya on global map

Kenya is hosting the elite athletics event just six weeks after it successfully hosted the WRC Safari Rally.

The country was selected to host the event after successfully hosting the IAAF World U-18 Championship in 2018.

Kenya, the first African country to host these major world track and field events, has now set its sights on hosting the World Championship in 2025.

Kenyan marathoner banned

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported Kenyan long-distance runner Racheal Mutgaa was slapped with a three-year ban over doping.

The ban was confirmed on Thursday, August 19, by the Athletics Integrity Unit.

In a statement shared by AIU on Twitter, samples picked from the marathoner showed presence and use of a prohibited substance.
