Luis Suarez was far from happy with comments made by Andreas Pereira ahead of Uruguay's quarter-final clash against Brazil on July 7.

Uruguay beat Brazil on post-match penalties to eliminate the record world champions from the continental competition.

Speaking ahead of the game, Pereira reiterated that Brazil had a better squad than their opponents, despite their impressive form under Marcelo Bielsa.

"The Uruguayan national team is very good, but if you take it name by name, we have a team that they dream of having."

What Suarez said to Pereira

Suarez fired back, asking the Fulham midfielder to show more respect to Uruguay.

"We have the best midfielders in the world, top-level players. To talk about Uruguay, you have to have a little more respect, and know the history of Uruguay," he said as quoted by Metro UK.

Uruguay triumphed on post-match penalties after a goalless stalemate in normal time. Pereira came off the bench in the 82nd minute, while Suarez was an unused substitute.

Manuel Ugarte scored the winning goal after Sergio Rochet saved Eder Militao's effort, and new Juventus star Douglas Luiz hit the post.

Uruguay will now play Colombia in the semi-finals, with the winner meeting one of Argentina or Canada in the final to be staged at the Hard Rock Gardens in Florida.

Why Bellingham was happy with 'Brazil's' exit

Sports Brief has also reported that Vinicius Junior's Ballon d'Or credentials took a hit after Brazil were eliminated from Copa America.

The Real Madrid forward was the favourite heading into the Copa America after guiding his club to Champions League glory.

Jude Bellingham could now usurp him after the England star qualified for the semi-final of Euro 2024.
