In a surprising turn of events, former Bafana Bafana head coach Steve Komphela has recently returned to DStv Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.

He resumed managerial duties after bagging his 18th career posting, less than a year after he left the club for brief stints at Moroka Swallows and Golden Arrows.

The 56-year-old will assist Manqoba Mngqithi, who is still viewed as the caretaker coach after Rulani Mokwena was relieved of his duties.

His return to Sundowns, as outlined in an official statement, has made him one of the greatest journeymen in South African football management.

Komphela said he was excited to rejoin Masandawana ahead of the coming season, via GOAL:

"I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns where I was always inspired and treated with respect and love. I am committed to contributing to the club achieving its goals in South Africa and on the African continent."

He also stated that Mamelodi Sundowns would scout for the best coach to lead the club to greater heights following Rulani Mokwena's exit.

"I think the team will be able to go out there and get a coach who aligns with the values and standards of the team. From the outside, you can see that there are different opinions, and such things happen in the big clubs."

Why Rulani Mokwena was sacked

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Kaizer Chiefs star, Junior Khanye disclosed why Rulani Mokwena was sacked as head coach of Sundowns.

The tactician left his role by mutual consent despite winning titles at Masandawana, including the maiden edition of the African Football League.

According to Khanye, Sundowns' losses in the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League exit were likely to have cost Mokwena his job at the club.
