Selecting the recipient of October's prestigious individual football award is particularly challenging this year.

The primary contenders have been Real Madrid stars Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior.

However, Vinicius' prospects have dimmed following Brazil's elimination from the Copa America 2024.

The Brazilian's setback has given Bellingham a substantial advantage. If Bellingham can guide England to victory in Euro 2024, his chances of claiming the prestigious award will significantly improve.

Brazil lost to Uruguay on penalties, while England prevailed 5-3 in a shootout against Switzerland, per Yahoo Sports.

Bellingham leads Ballon d'Or race

England are set to clash with the Netherlands in the semi-final on July 10, inching closer to a potential final showdown with either France or Spain.

Bellingham has emerged as a key figure, scoring two decisive goals that have propelled the Three Lions forward.

While his overall form has wavered, his critical goals have made a significant impact.

Bellingham's winning goal against Serbia earned three points for England, and his last-minute equalizer against Slovenia pushed the match into extra time, culminating in a 2-1 victory.

Vinicius loses grip on Ballon d'Or race

In contrast, Vinicius had a frustrating Copa America. Despite scoring two goals, he was suspended for Brazil’s game against Uruguay after receiving two yellow cards, per GOAL.

Despite an outstanding club season where he guided Real Madrid to a UEFA Champions League victory, Vinicius' chances of securing the individual accolade have likely been hurt by Brazil's early Copa America exit.

The rivalry between these two Madrid teammates remains fierce. Both have shone on the international stage, but Bellingham might emerge as the frontrunner if he can lead England to their first Euro title since 1966.

Messi sneaks into Ballon d’Or debate

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Messi could challenge for the Ballon d'Or this year after Bellingham and Vini looked pale in their respective international competitions.

Fans are convinced that winning the Copa America with Argentina for a successive time could put him back right in the mix for a record-extending ninth golden ball prize.

Messi's 12 goals and 14 assists might not have the same pull in the MLS as in a European league, but winning Copa America will give the Argentina captain the edge.
