Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye disclosed why Rulani Mokwena was sacked as the head coach of Premier Soccer League side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Rulani left his role by mutual consent despite winning titles for Masandawana, including the maiden edition of the African Football League.

According to Khanye, Sundowns's loss in the Nedbank Cup and Champions League exit cost Mokwena his job.

Media reports indicated that the tactician and the club's sporting director, Flemming Berg, also had differences.

Mokwena was said to be unimpressed by how players move in and out of the club.

Sundowns won their historic seventh consecutive title under the 37-year-old, losing just one match and scoring 73 points in the just-concluded 2023/2024 season.

However, Khanye has suggested that the club hierarchy expected more from the team. He said, as per iDiski Times:

“There are expectations at Sundowns especially when it comes to the Champions League. Even the last trophy that he lost to Pirates is what cost him.
“I believe the technical director had a problem with Rulani Mokwena because when Rulani was still there they signed players like Zungu.
" Rulani also kept a player like Sirino because he knew his capabilities.
“I’ll be honest I feel that the technical director had a hand in this but not winning the Champions League and not getting to the final was an issue."

Mokwena confirms new job

Sports Brief earlier reported that Rulani Mokwena confirmed that he has a new coaching job after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this month.

Mokwena confirmed in an interview with Marawa Sports Worldwide that he would be coaching an amateur team, Black Poison, after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns. He said:

"I am already employed, and I am going to coach Black Poison for the next few weeks," he said.
