Anthony Taylor was reportedly forced to 'flee' the stadium after officiating Germany's loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on July 5.

Mikel Merino scored in the 118th minute to knock out the hosts and maintain Spain's perfect start to the competition.

Germany, however, felt hard done by after Taylor waved off their appeals for a penalty after the ball appeared to strike Marc Cucurella's hand in the first half of extra time.

The Premier League referee stood his ground with his Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Stuart Atwell rubberstamping his decision.

There have been reports by BILD that Julian Nagelsamann's assistant, Sandro Wagner, stormed Taylor's dressing room as he hurled some expletives at the Englishman. The report, however, adds that those close to Taylor admitted that such a conversation happened but denied that strong words were used.

The German outlet further claims that Taylor was forced to flee the Stuttgart Arena after the incident without offering an explanation for his decision.

UEFA has since confirmed that the 45-year-old made the correct decision. The governing body issued new guidelines ahead of the tournament on what would be considered a handball. As the Athletic reports, Cucurella's hands were by his side and in a vertical position, and thus, despite the ball clearly striking his hand, did not meet the threshold to award a penalty.

When Jose Mourinho confronted Anthony Taylor

This is not the first time Taylor has been confronted about his on-pitch decisions. After the 2023 Europa League final between AS Roma and Sevilla, Jose Mourinho confronted Taylor in a parking lot.

The then-Roma manager was angered that a couple of decisions had gone against his team as they lost the final on post-match penalties.
