A new debate has been unfolding within the Nigerian football community about who the best player of the current Super Eagles team is.

That position, which was undoubtedly attributed to Victor Osimhen throughout 2023, has become a topic of a more subtle discussion.

This is due to the impressive performances of William Troost-Ekong at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ademola Lookman with Atalanta, and Victor Boniface, who had a historic season as the top scorer for Bayer Leverkusen.

Amid this ongoing conversation, former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has shared his perspective on who he believes is the best player on the current Nigerian team.

Oliseh speaks on Nigeria’s best players

In a candid interview with Elegebete TV Sports, the 49-year-old former Super Eagles captain discussed various topics related to the team, including his picks for the best players in the current squad. He highlighted Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface as the standout performers.

"I'm looking at Lookman and one that might surprise you, Boniface. I find him extraordinarily good," he said. "I watch this guy every week because he's playing just 45 minutes from my house at Leverkusen, so I've had the opportunity to watch him play many times.
"He's a player who can do it all. He can play with his back to goal, he's a threat one-on-one, he's fast, strong in the air, and he lifts the entire team," Oliseh added.

Lookman was one of the best players for the Super Eagles at AFCON, where he directly contributed to four goals. He also scored a brilliant hat-trick to help Atalanta win the Europa League in May.

Boniface, on the other hand, was awarded the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season after an exceptional campaign, netting 14 goals and providing nine assists in 23 league games, according to FotMob.

NFF chief discusses delay in naming Nigeria coach

Sports Brief also reported on a Nigerian football chief explaining delays in appointing the next Super Eagles coach.

The federation chief emphasised the precarious situation of qualifications that the Nigerian national team is facing.
