Arda Guler had a hand in both goals as Turkiye beat Austria to progress to the quarter-final of the 2024 European Championship, which is taking place in Germany.

The Crescent Stars brushed aside the Austrians 2-1 in their round of 16 encounter to set up a quarter-final date with the Netherlands, who came out of the same group as Ralf Rangnick’s men.

Centre-half Merih Demiral was the star of the night with two goals, and closely following was Guler, who orchestrated things as a false nine in Vincenzo Montella’s 3-4-3 system.

Guler matches Ronaldo and Rooney's records

As noted by BBC MOTD, the 19-year-old became the third teenager to score and assist in the same Euro tournament, equalling legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

Ronaldo and Rooney achieved this feat 20 years ago at Euro 2004, when Guler was not even born, making his achievement even more remarkable.

The former Madrid star scored two goals and two assists, while his former Manchester United teammate scored four goals and added an assist.

The Real Madrid youngster scored one of the goals of the tournament contenders in Turkiye's opening group game against Georgia.

Goalscorer Demiral also set a record with his two goals. The first, in 57 seconds, according to BR Football, is the fastest knockout goal in the competition’s history.

The second makes him the first defender to score a brace since Jean-François Domergue for France against Portugal in 1984.

Guler debunks Montella spat rumours

Sports Brief reported that Guler quashed rumours of issues with Montella after the head coach dropped him for the 3-0 second group game loss to Portugal.

The youngster started off the bench in the second game despite scoring a world-class goal in the first game, leading to speculation that he was dropped because of an issue.
