The tense last-16 clash extended into extra time, ending in a 0-0 stalemate.

Ronaldo's 114th-minute penalty was saved by Slovenia's goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, leaving him in tears as teammates rallied around him to offer comfort before playing resumed.

In the subsequent penalty shootout, the Real Madrid legend successfully converted Portugal’s first penalty, while his teammate Diogo Costa heroically saved all three attempts from Slovenia’s Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbič.

Mane consoles Ronaldo after penalty miss

Earlier, during the extra-time break, Ronaldo was distraught and crying at halftime in extra time after his penalty was saved by Oblak, diving to his left to push the ball against a post.

Mane, his Al-Nassr teammate, reached out on Instagram via Football on TNT, writing:

"You remain a great champion! CR7."

Ronaldo's Euro 2024 goal drought continues

Ronaldo's frustration was palpable throughout the initial 90 minutes, as he continued to search for his first goal of Euro 2024.

Despite three free kicks and two mistimed headers earlier in the match, the Portugal star appeared poised to score his first clear shooting chance in open play, per the BBC.

This opportunity arose in the 89th minute, as he broke free on goal with a perfectly timed pass into his stride.

His low, powerful left-footed shot seemed destined for the net, but Oblak's block proved decisive. Once more, Ronaldo expressed his frustration, stretching out his arms in disbelief.

Ronaldo's mom left heartbroken

In a related report, Sports Brief noted that Ronaldo's missed penalty deeply affected not only him but also his mother, Dolores Aveiro.

Cameras captured Ronaldo's emotional reaction, underscoring the significant impact of the miss.

Dolores Aveiro, a steadfast supporter throughout her son's illustrious career, was visibly heartbroken and unable to contain her emotions.
