Ronaldo's penalty miss and eventual redemption

According to ESPN, Ronaldo had previously scored his last 13 penalties before stepping up for the decisive shot that could have sealed Portugal's fate and avoided the dreaded shootout.

However, Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak broke that streak, diving the right way to save Ronaldo's effort in the most critical moment.

Heartbroken by the miss, Ronaldo appeared on the verge of tears, feeling he had squandered a golden opportunity for his team as his teammates consoled him.

However, when the penalty shootout commenced, CR7 showed immense courage, stepping up to take Portugal's first spot-kick.

He expertly dispatched his effort from 12 yards, sending the ball beyond Oblak's reach, setting the tone for what would be a comfortable shootout victory, the BBC reports.

Further successful strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, combined with heroic saves from Diogo Costa, ensured Portugal's 3-0 victory in the shootout, propelling them to the last eight.

Ronaldo pleads with fans

While victory restored joy in the Portuguese camp, it was the veteran forward's gesture that caught the attention of many.

After scoring, Ronaldo made a heartfelt gesture, apologizing to the Portuguese fans behind the goal and taking full responsibility for his earlier miss.

His sincere plea for forgiveness resonated with the crowd.

What's next for Ronaldo and Portugal?

Portugal's next challenge is a showdown with a Kylian Mbappe-led France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, promising an exciting clash between two of the world's elite national teams.

Ronaldo turns attention to France

In a related publication, Sports Brief reported that Cristiano Ronaldo is now focused on the upcoming quarter-final clash against France at the European Championships on Friday, July 5, 2024.

The Portugal captain, who missed a penalty in extra time before converting in the shootout, described the game against Les Bleus as a "war."

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner, making his final appearance at the Euros, hopes to conclude his career with a triumph.
