The coaching saga of the Super Eagles continues to generate significant conversation across Nigeria's footballing community.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of Finidi George.

The 53-year-old left his role as coach following a disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification fixture against the Republic of Benin.

However, as the federation attempts to appoint a replacement for Finidi, Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Owah Enoh, has outlined a list of criteria the NFF should consider in appointing the country’s next coach.

Sports minister hands criteria to NFF?

According to a report from media outlet, Brila.net, the minister has urged the federation to appoint a manager with a proven track record, especially given the Super Eagles' risk of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"The Super Eagles need a coach with pedigree and a history of achievement. We need someone who can lead us to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and ensure our qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup."

The minister emphasised the importance of appointing not only a tactically astute manager but also someone with extensive experience in African football.

"The landscape of African football demands specific knowledge and expertise. We need a coach who has demonstrated experience in these areas and can bring out the best in our players.
Time is of the essence. We must act swiftly to prepare for the 2025 AFCON and the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The future of Nigerian football hinges on the decisions we make."

Several managers continue to be linked with the Super Eagles coaching role. According to a report from OwnGoalNigeria, Antonio Conceicao, Marc Brys, and Didier Six are among the coaches being considered by the football federation.

NFF agrees deal with high-profile coach for Nigeria

Sports Brief also previously reported that the NFF has agreed on a deal with a world-class coach for the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian team is without a permanent manager for the second time in 2024 following Finidi’s sudden departure.

However, recent reports have suggested that an announcement of the next manager could be well on the horizon.
