Germany's game against Denmark at Euro 2024 on June 29 served some very scary scenes. The Round of 16 clash at Signal Iduna Park was momentarily suspended due to severe weather conditions.
Centre referee Michael Oliver stopped the match after a deafening thunderclap was heard in the stadium. Lightning strikes then occurred close to the stadium, forcing Oliver to ask players off the pitch.
The game was halted for close to 25 minutes. The two teams only emerged after the weather conditions had become better and UEFA had deemed it fit for play to resume.
When Denmark player lost leg to lightning
The scenes at Dortmund reawakened the sad story of Jonathan Richter, who was struck by lightning in 2009. Ritcher, who played as a midfielder for FC Nordsjælland, suffered the catastrophic experience during a training match against Hvidovre.

The incident saw Ritcher suffer a cardiac arrest, and doctors were forced to put him into a coma to save his life. The Guardian reports that he was placed in an induced coma for 10 days.
Six weeks later, the lower part of his left leg was amputated, leaving the midfielder disabled.
As captured by Transfermarkt, Denmark's current coach, Kasper Hjulmand, was one of Nordsjælland's coaches at that time. This explains why the Danish players were desperate for Oliver to stop the game and recall them inside until the situation had normalised.
