According to Africa News, Nguemo, who scored three goals in 42 appearances for the Indomitable Lions, and his chauffeur died on the spot.

The deceased ex-footballer played for several clubs during his career, including French sides, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux, and also Celtic in Scotland.

Until his death, Nguemo, who participated in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for Cameroon and was on the losing team in the 2008 final against Egypt, was working as a youth coach with French side, Nancy.

FECAFOOT pays tribute to Nguemo

Meanwhile, the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has extended its deepest condolences to Nguemo’s family, friends, and the football community after his death, ESPN reports.

FECAFOOT president and four-time Africa Footballer of the Year, Samuel Eto'o, also expressed his sorrow and sadness of the demise of his former teammate after hearing about his passing.

Ngeumo’s former clubs, including Celtic, Bordeaux, Saint-Etienne, and Nancy have all sent their condolences to the family of the 38-year-old following his tragic passing on Thursday, June 27.

Eto’o and Sports Minister put aside friction

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Eto'o and Cameroon's Sports Minister, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, seemed to have put aside the disagreement between them for a moment during the game against Cape Verde.

The Indomitable Lions produced their best performance amid the chaos in Cameroonian football to beat Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finalists, Cape Verde in Yaoundé on June 8 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

A brace from veteran forward, Vincent Aboubakar, and strikes from Michael Ngadeu and Nouhou Tolo, were enough as Cameroon's national team secured an important 4-1 qualifier victory in a game at home.
