Black Stars midfielder, Elisha Owusu, has been handed a new contract at French Ligue 1 side, AJ Auxerre.

The 26-year-old signed a deal that will keep him at the French club until the summer of 2027.

Owusu played a pivotal role in the return of AJ Auxerre back to the Ligue 1 after making 33 appearances for the club last season.

The French-born Ghanaian joined the club in January 2023, but a long-term injury ruled him out for most of the season as the former French champions suffered demotion.

However, his return to fitness proved essential for the club as they made a quick return to the top flight with his goal against rival club, Troyes, handing them the Ligue 2 title.

The club confirmed the contract extension on their official website, reaffirming the importance of Owusu to the team.

"This contract extension is therefore a strong symbol of the club's ambition to perform at the highest level and the entire AJA is delighted that the adventure with Elisha continues," wrote the club.

Owusu is currently the deputy captain of Auxerre and will play a leading role in Ligue 1 next season.

He was part of Ghana's squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier this year and also featured in the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, per Sofascore.

Owusu and Mensah help Auxerre gain promotion

Sports Brief also previously reported that Gideon Mensah and Owusu secured Ligue 1 promotion with Auxerre with a game to spare after a draw against Amiens.

The Black Stars duo played a pivotal role across the season as the former French champions sealed their return to the French top flight after a season in Ligue 2.
